HENRY STENNING 1802-1851

Henry was baptised in Bolney on 25th January 1802. (Detail from Parish Register). He was the first son of John Stenning and Mary Sanders. The Register was signed by John Challen, Rector.

John and Mary were married on 4 October 1801 in Bolney. John was buried on 23 July, 1835 at Bolney and Mary on 11 May 1843.

Henry married Mary Pickard (born 1 July 1801) on 25 June 1825 at Horley. Their first son William was baptised at the Parish Church at Twineham on 20th August and this entry in the Register was signed "Greene" Curate. At the bottom of the page is "Wm. John Hutchinson, Rector and John Botting, Churchwarden".

It is not known when Henry moved from Bolney to Twineham. It was a small move as the Parish of Bolney and Twineham are next door to each other. Probably it was to seek work and we see him practising as a Shoemaker at Twineham in the 1841 Census. Their second child was a daughter, Sarah, baptised on 3rd August, 1828. On 26 September, 1830 a baby boy, Henry was baptised and this time "R. Greene" signs himself "Off Minister" (Official?). Only 18 months later baby Henry died and was buried at Twineham on 7th March 1832. Charles Goring signed as Rector in the Parish Records. Two months later Thomas (the ancestor of Mrs. Joan Stenning's husband Frank) was baptised, again at Twineham, on 20th May, 1832. The "Off Minister" presiding, was "L. Dunn".

Jane, the next child born to Henry and Mary was baptised on 20th October, 1834 by "L. Goring, Rector". A further child, James, was baptised on 7th August, 1836 again by "L. Goring, Rector".

The final child of Henry and Mary was baptised Albert at the Twineham Parish Church. Christened Albert on 12 March 1840 by Arthur Anstey, Curate of Bolney and Twineham.

Joan Stenning was unable to find the graves of either baby Henry or his father Henry in Twineham churchyard. Henry was buried at Twineham on 23 February, 1851 at Twineham. Sadly many of the stones have been removed and I understand the records of burials have been stolen. There are a cluster of tiny graves, obviously of children, but many are without names. When we visit Twineham Churchyard we shall just have to imagine them lying there together peacefully. It is such a peaceful spot and in the Spring the ground is covered in primroses and daffodils and it is so quiet you can hear the birds singing.

On the Census of 1841, all the family are living together except for baby Henry, but by 1851, they have obviously gone separate ways following the death of Henry, the father. We find William, the oldest with a young family at Gearings Cottage. There is no trace of Sarah or Thomas. In the case of Thomas I suspect he is serving his apprenticeship as a Baker. Jane and James are also missing and the only other one I can find is Albert, age 11 shoemaker's son visiting John Wood at Twineham.

WILLIAM STENNING 1826

William was baptised at the Parish Church at Twineham, West Sussex on the 20th August, 1826. He was the eldest child of Henry and Mary (nee Pickard). by the Curate "R. Geere". On the 1841 Census for Twineham he is shown living with his parents.

Twineham Green    Henry Stenning    Age 35     Shoemaker    Born in this County
                              Mary                           35
                              WILLIAM                  14     Shoemaker

                              James                           4
                             Albert                            1

On 13th August, 1847 William married Harriet (Mason) at Twineham. Both were described as being "of full age" (over 21). William's trade was Shoemaker as was his father, Henry. Harriet's father was John, described as a Carpenter. Both William and Harriet signed the register as did the Witnesses, Henry Stenning and Mary.

In the Census for Twineham of 1851, William and Harriet are living at Gearings Cottage with their family.

Twineham    WILLIAM    Age 24         Journeyman Shoemaker    Born Twineham
                    Harriet                  28
                    Frederick              3           Son
                    Aaron                    1
                    NELSON             5 months

As you will see there is no mention of Henry's widow, Mary, so she must have made her home elsewhere when her husband Henry died in February 1851.

There does not appear to be any further records for William or Harriet.

This information is from Joan Stenning - England.
